For these reasons and so many more, we're proud to pay tribute to one of our country's true innovators with this 2006 Proof Franklin "Scientist" Silver Dollar. 2006 Proof Franklin "Scientist" Silver Dollar Features: Honors Benjamin Franklin - on January 17, 2006, the United States Mint issued a Silver Dollar honoring Benjamin Franklin as a "Scientist" on the 300th anniversary of his birth. It was one of two coins released that day honoring Franklin, the other being "Founding Father". Beautiful design - recreates on its obverse a rendition of Franklin and his legendary kite experiment. The reverse of this coin, in a tribute to Franklin's role as a patriot and statesman, features a recreation of his political cartoon, "Join, or Die." The cartoon was published in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. Limited edition commemorative coin - sold out almost immediately at the United States Mint Proof - in addition to the regular coins, the United States Mint also makes a limited number of Proof coins each year. They are struck at least twice on highly polished coin blanks to bring out the mirrored background and high-relief images.
